Mesothelioma - An Asbestos Illness

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that develops in the linings that protect certain organs. It usually develops in the lung (pleura) but can also be found in the chest wall, abdomen, or tests.

People who have been exposed for a long period of time to asbestos at high levels and over a long period are at risk. Mesothelioma symptoms may manifest between 10 and fifty years after exposure.

Signs and symptoms

Patients suffering from mesothelioma in late-stage stages may also experience fatigue, nausea and weight loss. Cancer cells can spread from the lymph nodes into the bloodstream in certain cases. This can worsen existing symptoms and cause new ones to appear.

Doctors can diagnose mesothelioma with an extensive examination and by asking the patient about their history of exposure to asbestos lawsuit. The doctor will refer the patient to additional tests, such as imaging technologies which can see inside the body and determine the extent to which the cancer spread. Prevention

The people who work with asbestos or live in an area where materials that contain asbestos are disposed of are at the highest risk of developing mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can also be caused by living near asbestos mines or factories or exposure to asbestos-containing airborne fibers or having a family member who was exposed to asbestos.
