There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our top option. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to getting hung up on shoes and socks and can't navigate tightly packed rooms very well in our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and can be used while you're at work or going to school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. And, if you have to change the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to sweep floors. Its intelligent cleaning robot mop and vacuum maps as well as quick navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in dealing with larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with a self-emptying dustbin as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot vacuum and mop. It has a range of advanced features that help you forget your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take charge of both mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot employs an array of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to do the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vac works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home according to the degree of dirt they are.

If you own a larger home, it is worth selecting a robot that comes with the option of cleaning zones or spots. This allows you to tell the robot which area of your home needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. A stair mode can be useful if you have a large furniture. Additionally, a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you'd expect from its price tag. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion, which cleans better than most of the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process that collects data on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, arrange the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms for better performance. The app also grants access to many options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It also comes with an app that's not as intuitive and a small base station that does not double as a bin for emptying.
