Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective in removing pet hair. They do have some flaws, however, that prevent them from being our top option. For one, the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera to see around corners.

It's still a good value particularly if your office or home has a lot of bare floors and you want to save some money. It's also quiet and operates while you are at work or in school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does have self-emptying docks, however. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be replaced with an awe-inspiring one in a matter of minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek automatic vacuum cleaner and mop cleaner that also has the ability to sweep floors. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient at dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with strong suction and a self-emptying bin. It's the best robot mop vacuuogy and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is due to the combination of high-tech sensors including a structured lighting system, a camera, Best robot Hoover and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot vacuum with mop we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to use. It has an intuitive mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit, which can be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.

It's also a bit costly however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to put up some more volume and a little more cost this is a efficient two-in-one device that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that will let you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, though this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vac works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house in accordance with the degree of dirt they tend to be.

If you have a bigger home, it's worth selecting a model with a zones or spot cleaning modes. This allows you to inform the robot of which area of your home needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice control. If you have furniture, a stair-mode is also a good option. Finally the recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you'd think from its price. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion that cleans better than most of the other mop cleaners for robots we've tested. It's also self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate a mapping run, which gathers information on your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, set up an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms for better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

The twin cameras are designed to resemble adorable eyes. It is excellent at vacuuming, but it is more likely to get caught on low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums we have test. It also has a less user-friendly app and a tiny base station that doesn't double as a bin for emptying.
