Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. Each upgrade also increases a random substat.

The more modernized gear generally has a higher trade value, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader enables players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be made on any type of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used to upgrade will remain in use for a long time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be used to create enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the item level, however they'll always be cheaper than buying new equipment. For instance upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items that are used to level up weapons tools, armor, and other items. They are purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level, in the event that there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the item slot and the current level of the item as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than gloves or bracers for example. Each upgrade item cost 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Many locations have upgraders for their items in addition to the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of getting a new recipe. The discount for upgrading increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for Item level upgrade items in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades require several methods, which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. Once the player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot, upgrading other ithighest ilvl possible for all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests have one purpose and it's crucial to use them wisely. For instance it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to make. This is especially applicable to items like rings and trinkets that occupy multiple slots. The account-wide discount will only apply when all slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
