WoW Item Upgrades

Item upgrades--more commonly known as "upping"--are enchantments and items that can be incorporated into armor and weapons and increase their power. These upgrade components add a certain number of points to a level gauge for the item, with their cost increasing in proportion to their rarity.

The melee PvP scene is highly influenced by the perfect roll of armor due to its ability to minimize weapon damage.

Type-restricted upgrades

Upgrades are a crucial part of the equipment crafting process. They can enhance the stats of an item upgrade and make it stronger or weaker, and even add a bonus effect. They can also alter the appearance of an item. Some upgrades are universal while others are governed by specific rules for weapons and armor. The wrong upgrade could ruin a weapon that was otherwise fantastic, and even make it useless.

As a general rule you can only upgrade an item of equipment up to the level of its top-level counterpart. You can only upgrade helms to the highest level. Weapons can be upgraded to the level equivalent of a sword. This doesn't increase the weapon's ability to deal damage and can reduce the value of trade.

You can upgrade an item upgrader mod using flightstones or crests. The amount of each depends on the level of the item upgrading as well as the slot. Upgrades to swords, for instance will require more flightstones compared to an upgrade to the Cloak. You can also receive discounts on the number flightstones or crests needed to upgrade an item level upgrade.

The diamond-shaped indicator on an item is filled up when it is upgraded. Each step increases the item's Tier by one-third. The maximum Tier level is Tier 3.
