For a long time, the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which can result in changes to genes or whole genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the emergence of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. This differential reproduction can, over time, lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution" originates from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took shape in the sciences and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. This shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and allow the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its aim is to root out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
