Melding form with function, French-door refrigerators offer elegant double doors that open up to a spacious fridge up top and freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out because of their unique features, including through-the-door dispensers and higher-end ice makers.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the right home. They looked at the capacity of storage, layout, and energy efficiency, among other features.

The name implies that the GE Profile series targets those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. The refrigerator is brimming with features, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a smart water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Given that this fridge costs an extra amount, I'd like to see higher quality.

Aside from that blip however, this refrigerator is a great choice. It has a large freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth French-door fridges. It also holds a lot of frozen food compared to other models.

The fridge comes with 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment has 18.5 cubic feet, which is the standard for a French-door refrigerator at this price. It has a decent sized icemaker in the left door. However it's not the biggest one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelving in both compartments to create customized storage layout for what you want to store. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive. Its LED lighting is a nice touch and the storage bins have a third shelf that folds up beneath itself to allow you to store large items. The drawers come with temperature controls so that you can set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, however I found their plastic textured coatings to be a bit hard on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the complete set of features you'd expect from a fridge in this price range with Wi-Fi and app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and has a ton of customization options. It also alerts you when a door is left open, when the fridge or french door integrated fridge freezer needs to be defrosted and when it's time to change the filter.

It is nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill it's an option in other GE refrigerators that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to pour out at once. The fridge shows a countdown to display how much water is left, but it's not as effective as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Doly when storing tall objects. Also the shelves aren't completely sprillproof, and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. The trays are easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they must be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth french door fridge with ice and water Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is an excellent counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage into an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge has a standard rf9000 family hub french style fridge freezer with beverage centre ™ door layout, with two rows of spill-capture shelving and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded in order to create more space for taller items. There's also a full-width drawer for deli and an inside water dispenser.

One of the best aspects of this refrigerator is that the ice maker is in the freezer, [empty] making it easy to transfer frozen ice to the fridge to use as required. The freezer also comes with clever design features, such as sliding drawers that can help you organize your items. It also has a huge bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food items and an additional ice storage bin.

Another great feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can control the temperature, lighting, and other aspects of your refrigerator from your smartphone. It's a nice way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, especially if you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat but it doesn't enhance the performance of the fridge. In fact, it took longer to defrost and chill food in this refrigerator than some of the others we tested. This could be due to the larger capacity.

The doors are another problem with this fridge. The handles with a sunken design let shorter people open them from the bottom. However, taller people still have a hard time closing them without slamming. It would have been much better if they came with a front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a good choice for those who want to combine the benefits of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with a more efficient layout. Its capacity is above average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also a little cheaper than the top counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which helps make it a popular choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth french door fridge no plumbing Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good option for those looking for a French-door refrigerator that doesn't cost a lot of budget. It's a basic fridge that might not be as appealing as its rivals however it has enough features to make a suitable option. Its most important feature, the adjustable temperature drawer, helps to keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water dispenser and a decent ice maker that operates quickly.

The "Chill Drawer", which sits over the two crisper bins, is a excellent feature. This drawer lets you divert a portion of the refrigerator's cooling power directly to this area, so you can put away food items that require special attention. You can adjust this feature using an adjustable slider that is located just in the middle of the drawer. You can also use this feature to set a general cooling setting for the entire fridge, however, I've found that changing the general settings tends produce better results than specific ones.

During my tests, the temperatures of the refrigerator stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary significantly from 38 degrees. This is a pretty good performance however it doesn't be among the top in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also combine this fridge with a smart thermometer for more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge proof" finish. It does a great job of preventing streaks and fingerprints from appearing, even compared to shiny stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
