In the past the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. But silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. YECs are the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal, and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.

OECs are not as well-known, but they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life began on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their position "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." The theory says that God creates the original species and then allows these to evolve over time. In the end the evolutionary changes result in new species similar to the original ones.

Others believe that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created at the same time and that they developed slowly afterwards. They reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has achieved its first victory by eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution as well.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an image of students as being negative. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in the concept of evolution. The causes aren't clear, but may include religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor, together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
