Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

There are plenty of factors to consider when selecting the ideal double buggy right from the moment of birth. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options, age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

This buggy is essential for active families. It will grow with you and your family, from twins to toddlers. It is light with great maneuverability and is able to handle uneven terrain with ease.

What type of buggy do you want?

A double buggy is ideal for transporting two children, but not necessarily of the same age, side by side. They can also function as prams. Each seat comes with a reclining mechanism so that your children can lie down or sit in different positions. They also come with plenty of storage for everything from snacks and drinks to wipes and nappies. They're usually lightweight double stroller, fold easily, and small enough to fit in your car's boot. If you're someone who drives a lot, it's worth checking the buggy's maneuverability with the wheels folded and also to get out and into your boot.

The most popular type of double buggy is the side-byside that you've probably seen on other mothers' pushchairs or even rode in as a child yourself. They're ideal for twins who are older or who want to keep up with you. They also come in various seating configurations, including 'cinema seats'. They're usually easy to drive and, if you opt for a model with soft suspension, make light work of kerbs.

Tandem buggies are a popular option since they're more maneuverable than a side-by-side. This is because the second seat is positioned behind the first one, rather than over it. They're typically wider than a side-by-side and can be heavy when folded, which is why it's essential to make sure they be able to pass through doors and public transport. They can be used to transport twins or a toddler and baby or three kids with the inclusion of a buggy board.

Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They tend to be more expensive than side-by-sides and tandem buggies but provide plenty of flexibility and a high resale value. They're generally easy to steer, have a huge storage basket and can cope well on uneven surfaces. Some models come with a built-in ride-on board for children older than and 'cinema chairs'.

Do you have twins?

Double bun't necessary for every family. You might be able to get by with just one stroller, and some attachments such as baby straps and toddler carriers that permit you and your child to be able to best travel double stroller on their backs, or in front.

If you choose to purchase a double buggy, there are three types to pick from: side-by-side or tandem, and convertible. Side-by-side buggies have two seats next to each other, meaning that your children can see each other. They are larger than a single stroller, and can be difficult to maneuver over kerbs. Tandem buggies are compact that has one seat in the front and another at the back. However, they can be heavy and difficult to push.

Convertible double buggies are fantastic because they allow you to convert your stroller into double buggy by attaching an infant bassinet or car seat to the frame.
