What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their environments which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over many generations the changes could lead to the emergence new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process by which individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. The term "evolution" originates from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of living or conceiving offspring. Over time, this genetic variability can cause the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. This variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to future generations.

OECs aren't as known However, their beliefs are just as passionate like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old and believe that evolution is a lie.

Both types of creationism reject that scientific principles such as natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible because it requires a miracle, and that the pioneers of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and special creation and consider their views to be "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." This theory states that God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time and that they evolved slowly afterwards. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be included in their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has achieved its first victory by eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. The goal, according to STR, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an image of students as being negative. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that half of them did not believe in evolution. The causes are not certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6 and 7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
