The democratic system in South Korea is prone to populist tendencies. Nonetheless, it is healthier than one would expect.

The country is in search of a new development paradigm. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for ancestors and as well as gendered family relationships, continues to influence the society. However, there are signs that a secular culture is gaining ground.

Origins

Onjo, a prince from Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong, the founder of Goguryeo established the state of Baekje towards the end of the time. The new kingdom expanded its territory into the southwest of the peninsula and clashed with Goguryeo and China's commanderies in the region. Baekje took on Confucian ideas into its state belief system in 1390 CE, and introduced the male-centric concept of filiopiety a doctrine. Under the cover of filiopiety fathers were responsible to their families. They were expected to be obeyed by all and respected by their children and grandchildren.

Goryeo, who ruled from 918 to 1392 CE introduced the world to the Hangul alphabet built on the patterns created by the mouth when it was pronounced. This significantly improved communication between people, and resulted in an explosion of the writing of Buddhist texts. Woodblock printing and the movable metal type were also refined. It was during this time that the Samguk sagi, also known as 'History of the Three Kingdoms' was first written in 1145 CE.

Evolution in Korea

The Korean peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times and early evidence of human settlements is evident in the form graves lined with stones, with precious items like amazonite jewellery being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures known as dolmens, constructed from massive single stones, are widespread throughout the country.

In the first part of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognizable political state. The peninsula was then controlled by a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE) which included Baekje and 에볼루션 바카라 무료 other exhibits.

Gungye, a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital and held control over a portion of present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.

Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla and later joined Baekje into Goryeo and acted as a peaceful successor. In addition, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a central ruling system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. From that point on the Korean peninsula was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly grew into powerful states on the peninsula and in Manchuria.
