How to Replace an audi Car key Cover (velo-xachmas.com) G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are different pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with th signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This is a typical part that is found across the Audi 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
