If your bifold doors are squeaking to the wall, they might need a little maintenance. They could require cleaning or lubricated, or even adjusted. The issue could be caused by a loose screw on the top pivot or the top guide roller.

Remove the Door

Installing a set of internal bifold doors may seem like an involved and challenging task however, it's actually easy for DIYers with a bit of experience. Since bifold doors are complicated machines, they might require some 'tuning' to continue working properly. It could be as easy as tightening a screw, or as complex as taking off and replacing the door's pivot pin or roller.

You can usually resolve these issues by making a few simple adjustments, without having to take out the doors. You might notice that your bifold doors are sliding, scraping the floor or bouncing off the track. In order to fix these issues, it isn't a big deal, and with three easy steps, your bifold doors should be back in no time.

One of the most frequent issues that internal bifold doors have to face is the tendency to slide out of alignment. This can be caused by loose screws, holes in the anchor pins or simply a door that isn't aligned properly. In the majority of cases, you can correct this issue with a few simple adjustments, but if the door isn't moving at all it could be necessary to have it removed and replaced.

To take the door off, you'll need an appropriate screwdriver, and possibly two pliers (to help loosen any tight pivot pins). The screwdriver is used to disengage any locking levers that are on the bottom pivot bracket and the pliers allow you to wiggle the pin and take it off.

Once the top roller has been removed, you can lift the door, swivel downward and then remove it from its pivot brackets and track. It is usually a simple procedure, but you need to be careful to not let the door hit the door frame. Then you can sand the edge of the bi-fold door repair to smooth it. Then paint or refinish the door as required.

Remove the Roller Guide

This spring-loaded roller guides the mount on the top of a bifolding door to ensure smooth operation. It is designed to be used with Kenna frames and will fit doors that are 1 to 1/8 inch thick. It is made from steel, nylon and plastic components. It can be used to replace a worn or damaged guide.

The first step is to gather your tools. You'll save yourself a lot of frustration if you gather all your tools in advance. You'll also need a screwdriver and pliers. You can buy a set of basic tools at your local hardware store for a reasonable price. Keep some wood glue in the back of your hand. This can be useful when you need to glue one of the rollers back in the correct position.

Once you've got your tools, start by opening the bifold doors. Then, you'll need to loosening the top track bracket using your screwdriver. Once the bracket is loose, you should be able to slide the door off the top track. It could take a little few jigglings but it should be able to pop right off the track.

The pivot on the bottom of the frame will have to be removed. You'll want to do this from the outside of your home, so be sure to close any internal doors that are open. This will be a lot easier than working from inside. If the track on the bottom is in good shape, you'll be able to just lift up the door and then remove the track.

You'll have to replace the track if it is damaged. Hardware stores offer replacement tracks for bifold doors, as well as swinging closet doors. If the track is badly damaged, you may need to replace it completely.

After your track has been repaired or replaced, you'll need to test the doors for their proper operation. Check that they're capable of moving smoothly in and out of position. Also, you should ensure that the edges of the door are parallel to the frame when it is closed. If they're not, you'll need to adjust the top pivot bracket and tighten or loosen the bottom screwscrew until the door's edge lines up perfectly with the frame.

Replace the Roller

If they are installed correctly, bifold doors can neatly enclose laundry nooks, pantries and closets. Bifold doors are made up of two panels that are hinged and slide on a track at the top of the frame. Over time, the roller guide bearings may wear out and cause the doors to slide and rub against the floor. Replacing the roller guide requires just a few minutes and basic tools.

This issue can be resolved by getting rid of the bottom pivot adjustment screws and loosening the top track mounting screws, and moving anchor/pivot.

A new set of top roller guides is a low-cost solution to a problem that can make bifold doors difficult to operate. They are usually available at your local hardware shop in the door section. However, they can also be purchased online from several suppliers. You will also need the squeeze-clamp and a tiny container Elmer's wood adhesive, that is sold in large box stores. The clamp is used to keep the area being repaired shut after the glue has been installed and dried.
