Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a world tour promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability.
